Public speaking? I’m one of those rare people who actually enjoy it. With a background in communications and a history in speech, drama, and improv, I’ve led everything from small-group trainings to conference sessions and keynotes.
My session “Barrels of Monkeys: How to Create Interactive Presentations for Engagement and Retention” has become a regular feature at statewide professional development conference. A favorite moment: filling an unexpected 30-minute gap for an audience of 800 when the keynote speaker ended early.
This is an excerpt of a longer presentation given at a state leadership conference for high school students. I was asked to come present on opportunities in technical careers. I developed the learning activities and have since been asked to reprise the presentation at schools and conferences around the state.
This activity was designed to take an abstract economic concept, the skills gap, and make it accessible to the average high school student. I also used this activity when presenting to administration about the economic impact of CTE courses in their district. It has been well received and regularly request over the last few years.
...and yes 2 weeks after this presentation I went into labor and had a little baby boy :).
